Well there’s not that many missing girls – two actually, but that’s sufficient for a lot of hand wringing and midnight phone calls and rushing about. Our protagonist Nicolette returns to her home town ten years after her best friend disappears. Nicolette’s dad is suffering from dementia and she’s hell bent on getting him to shut up and refrain from talking to the police. Why, you’ve got to ask? Then another girl disappears and again Nicolette knows more about that than she’s telling the police. The book unfolds backwards, Memento style, from day 15 to day 1. As a literary device it’s quite confusing and unnecessary, especially when the male characters have such confusingly similar names. I know you’ll be tempted to read the book from the back to the front like I tried to, but best not or the shocks will be revealed too fast. Just go along for the ride. There’s just enough here to keep you reading.
