This one somehow never quite convinces. The writing is good, the characters decent enough but us hardened thriller readers have been here before and it just fails to zing.
I do however like how Pinborough confounds our expectations. We assume the main character Lisa is in hiding from an abusive ex-partner but actually it’s much more complicated than that. But you have to ask SPOILER ALERT why the culprit didn’t just take her revenge much sooner? Surely there are less elaborate and more expedient ways to frame an old enemy than by concucting not one but two secret identities and tossing a toddler into the water on the assumption the toddler will be rescued by your enemy’s daughter and the subsequent publicity will allow you to reveal your enemy’s past life? A little contrived. And an intelligent, promising sixteen year old having a baby – is that really a happy ending? Pinborough did better with Behind Her Eyes and I hope she can do better again.
