The assured writing in Snap is what elevates it above your average crime thriller. All the characters are believable, from the slightly hilarious lawn mowing, vampire loving five year old sister Merry to poor sad, stressed Jack, eleven years old and trying to hold his family together after their mother is murdered and their father walks out. Your heart bleeds for these kids. During a burglary, Jack finds the knife he believes was used to murder his mother and the story unspools from there. Some of the ways in which the police utilise Jack and his burglary skills seem a little unlikely, but that aside it’s a really good read.
