The Double Silence by Mari Jungstedt

July 7, 2018 By Kim Kingston

Not quite sure how silence can be doubled, but I guess the title is a reference to two friends from a group of six who go missing. One man is pushed off a cliff and his fall witnessed by a windsurfer. Another woman goes missing on a bike ride on a small Swedish island. Then there’s an old man missing as well. Perhaps it should be The Triple Silence? Anyway, Jungstedt is a good writer and this is typically good Scandinavian crime writer. It does however suffer from too many voices. Including the perspective of a journalist on paternity leave serves very little purpose, and it tangles the mind to remember whose perspective we’re dealing with and their background when the perspective changes every chapter. A good edit is required, and the ending seems abrupt and underwritten but hey, it’s a good ride.
