The Lying Game by Ruth Ware

March 27, 2018 By Kim Kingston

This alleged thriller is pretty stupid; full of massive, illogical, gaping holes in the plot and burdened with a thoroughly self absorbed protagonist, Isa. The only bit that rings true is Isa’s love for her baby, whom she lugs from place to place with a startling lack of planning, all the while being uniformly awful to the baby’s father. The writing is competent- it’s just difficult to get invested in the interminable angst of the four friends when you feel like screaming at them that what they did fifteen years ago wasn’t actually so bad. Get a grip, girls!! Of course the plot thickens towards the end but by then I’d pretty much lost interest. Ware’s previous novel In A Dark, Dark Wood was much more satisfying.
