The Ruin by Dervla McTiernan

April 10, 2018 By Kim Kingston

A real winner of a police thriller from first time writer McTiernan, set in Ireland. Her main character, officer Cormac Reilly, is the sort of a chap you’d quite like to have a beer with but he is kept rather busy figuring out the politics and agendas within the Garda police station where he works. He is assigned a twenty year old cold case involving two children and their dead, neglectful mother at the same time as one of the children, now grown up, has apparently committed suicide. Many things about the suicide are not quite right, but the police seem reluctant to investigate. Reilly spends a lot of time confused but he’s compassionate and his instincts are good. And the story is quite a ripper – compelling from the very first page. Here’s hoping we see a lot more of Cormac Reilly.
