The Silence of the Sea by Yrsa Sigurdardottir

March 27, 2018 By Kim Kingston

Sigurdardottir is the thinking person’s thriller writer. She’s an Icelandic PD James – less about gory, shocking crimes and more about characters and motivations. This one’s a winner – a luxury yacht comes crashing into a harbour with no one on board. Among the missing are a family with six year old twin girls. The perspective switches back and forth between the investigation and the people on board, trying to cope with an increasing sense of dread and claustrophobia as they are picked off one by one. It’s good solid writing and the end packs an emotional punch. Don’t worry if you haven’t read Sigurdardottir’s previous works with the lawyer Thora Gudmundsdottir as protagonist – this one can stand alone. So good.
