This great little thriller was originally published in 2015 under the title Burnt Paper Sky. What She Knew takes us to terrifying places: the shock and the guilt that comes when a mother gives her eight year old son permission to ‘run ahead’, out of her sight, in a public park because she wants to give him some independence, and she wants him to believe the world is a safe place. And then he vanishes. The horror of it, when she is judged wanting by the media and those closest to her, and there are no clues as to where he is. It brings home the fact that the disappearance of a child damages all those that are those touched by it, including the police, and the child more than anyone. You’ll want to find out what happens to him. It’s a breathless, compelling, well written read.
