What do four people in an isolated lighthouse, an American couple gone missing after a house swap and a policewoman whose husband has apparently tried to commit suicide have in common? Well you have to read this little winner to find out. Sigurdardottir’s thriller, set in Iceland, fosters a creeping sense of ill ease rather than a high body count, which is so much more effective. Mind you, the bodies do mount up in the end, but the violence mostly occurs offstage and never seems gratuitous. Tightly plotted and intelligently handled fiction that will keep you reading well into the night and stay with you in the day.
